Curcumin in turmeric is 400x more powerful than metformin which is a common drug that treats diabetes. This was discovered by a 2009 study published in the Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications journal. The goal of some diabetes drugs is to active enzyme AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase).
This study found that a compound made by fermenting curcumin (turmeric), called tetrahydrocurcumin, activated the AMPK as high as 100,000x more than the pharmaceutical diabetes drug! Besides these health benefits, turmeric is also potentially beneficial for treating certain cancers, obesity, and bowel disease as well as helping to manage pain and cholesterol levels.
